Ten Minutes From Now, You Could Be Genuinely Happy...
…by simply rejecting all the misleading signals around youthat generate needless unhappiness and stress, day after day.
Strange how few of our friends could actually be described as happy.
In a world full of golden opportunities that our grandparents could only dream of, we seem to spend most of the day in a state of anxiety and stress about our private circumstances. And looking out at the wider world, we just go on year after year, vaguely feeling that we live in worrying times.
This constant state of dissatisfaction is one of the strangest effects of our age, especially as it can be shown to be mainly unjustified - an awful lot of worrying about nothing. So we should try to suggest at least a few clues about it, in order to fight it down.
The dazzle of media messages
Clearly the press, TV and the internet have a lot to do with it, firmly dictating what we see and hear, and if we’re not careful, dictating what we think and feel.
The media is really entertainment with an advertising agenda, and our attention is keenly competed-for all day and night. Therefore we are exposed to many wonderful and inspiring images which could make us optimistic, alternating with terrifying doomsday scare-talk which is known to rivet the attention and keep audiences watching.
Children - powerless and happy
Ask yourself why small children are naturally happy. They own nothing. They can’t influence events. They don’t see the point of planning. Yet they exude this sunny optimism that can spread joy around them. Philosophers down the centuries have tried again and again to revisit the child-mind, seeking to recapture its valuable secrets. Perhaps we should too.
The elderly are in somewhat the same position - often cheerful and serene, when they don’t have anything obvious to look forward to. Notice that wonderful defiant smile that says “I’ve had my life and you can’t take it away from me.”
This tells you that people quite unaware of Afghanistan or the Dow Jones Index - or dwelling in pitiful ignorance, as some would see it - are able to maintain decency and good cheer without setting a ruinously irresponsible example.
Grateful for good health
One lesson those elderly folk would certainly tell you for nothing - if you’ve got your health, you’ve got a lot to be grateful for.
Or even, just part of your health.
Not long ago, a popular American broadcaster suffered terrible burns in a house-fire, losing the use of both his hands. His reaction? “I used to be able to do 10,000 things. Now I can do 9,000. And I concentrate on those 9,000 - not the 1,000 I’ve lost.”
And you can’t summon a smile today, just because you’ve got a headache, your shares have gone down a point, you’ve managed to stain your jacket, and the electrician didn’t turn up on time ?
